The Society's beginnings......
Dudley and District Choral and Orchestral Society was formed in 1945 and gave it's first performance in Dudley Town Hall on the 29th December. They performed Handel's Messiah under the baton of the founder Dr Mainwaring. Since then there have been seven conductors.
In that first performance there were 114 ladies and 70 gentlemen. Today we have a more modest chorus of approximately 30 members. However we would always welcome new members! In the past we have had orchestral accompaniment, but also perform with just a pianist or organist to acompany us, depending on the work being performed.
Music and Europe.....
We have performed a varied selection of choral works, including several works by British composers such as, Purcell, Elgar and Rutter. We have also travelled around Europe with the choir, and have chosen our music to suit our surroundings, for example, we performed Faure's Requiem in Avignon in 2007.
We have visited Europe every other year since 1995, when we performed in Belgium and Holland. The itinerary since then has been;
